The Spirit in the Desert

A long time priest of the Los Angeles Diocese, Brad Karelius has written a fine new book entritled The Spirit in the Desert.  I recounts  a number of retreat-hikes in the Owens Valley, with special attention to the places sacred to the Paiute peoples who lived here.  The book is filled with careful and thoughtful guides to the walks, and with vivid detail.  Each is the locus for a retreat time with much s[iritual insight.  "Have you ever seen a view so beautiful that it hurts?  My mind is empty of thoughts and agenda and worries.  I feel totally in the present moment, rejoicing in this beauty and filled with wonder and gratitude to the One who made all of this.  In silence and solitude, God's loving, caring presence envelops me."

This book is warmly recommended.  It makes one want to follow in the author's footsteps.
